Frequently Asked Questions
Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers.
Who is a notary public?
A notary is a qualified legal professional who verifies and certifies documents for use abroad. In England and Wales, notaries are regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Notaries make sure that documents are genuine, properly signed, and legally valid for international use. Their seal and signature mean foreign authorities can trust the documents without further checks.
While many notaries are also solicitors, being a notary is a separate profession with its own rules and responsibilities. Only those officially registered can call themselves notaries or perform notarial acts.
Notaries can also prepare powers of attorney, witness oaths, and offer some legal advice.
All notaries must be trained, insured, and follow strict rules on independence, integrity, and service standards — helping ensure the public can trust their work.

What does a notary do?
We check who you are, watch you sign documents, and confirm they are real so they can be used abroad. We can also help get your documents legalised — including getting an apostille — so they’re accepted in other countries.
When is a Notary needed?
You may need a notary when your documents will be used in another country. A notary confirms your identity, witnesses your signature, and certifies that your documents are genuine — so they are accepted abroad.
Common examples include:
⦁ Signing a power of attorney for use overseas
⦁ Proving your identity or address to a foreign authority
⦁ Certifying academic or professional qualifications
⦁ Buying or selling property abroad
⦁ Getting married or applying for residency or a visa in another country
⦁ Setting up a company or doing business internationally
⦁ Legalising documents with an apostille or consular stamp
Are notarial services expensive?
Notary fees reflect the specialist nature of the work, but they are often less expensive than people expect. The cost depends on the type of document, how many you need, and whether legalisation (like an apostille) is required. At D’Aleo Public Notaries, we always provide clear pricing in advance, with no hidden fees.
For simple matters, fees are usually straightforward. For more complex or urgent requests, we’ll explain everything clearly before we start.
Notarisation, Legalisation & Apostille — What’s the difference?
⦁ Notarisation
This is the first step. A notary checks your identity, watches you sign the document, and certifies it as genuine. This is often required before a document can be used abroad.
⦁ Apostille
An apostille is an official stamp issued by the UK government (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office). It confirms the notary’s signature and seal — so the document is recognised in countries that follow the Hague Convention (like Spain, Italy, or the USA).
⦁ Legalisation
If your document is going to a country that does not accept an apostille (like the UAE or China), it may also need consular legalisation — an extra stamp from that country’s embassy.
What if I’m not sure what I need?
We’ll guide you through the process, making sure your documents meet all legal requirements. You can send us an email and call us to clarify at no cost.
Why use a Notary?
A notary helps protect against fraud by verifying your identity, understanding, and willingness to sign — giving your documents legal weight abroad.
Whether it’s a power of attorney, passport copy, deed, or certified translation, a notary’s seal ensures your paperwork is valid and trusted internationally. Fees are clearly explained upfront, with transparent quotes for simple or complex matters.
When your documents need to cross borders, a notary makes sure they’re ready. At DPN we are your solution.
I have an urgent matter. What if I need a notary outside regular hours?
We understand that sometimes urgent matters arise. If you need notarial services outside normal office hours, please contact us — we often can arrange flexible appointments to fit your schedule (even out of office hours) and we may accommodate your urgent need.
Just let us know your needs, and we’ll do our best to help.
